Beat the Summer with an Ayurvedic Routine ☀️๐ฟ
In Ayurveda, summer is known as Greeshma Rtu, a season dominated by Pitta dosha—the energy responsible for heat, transformation, and metabolism.
According to classical Ayurvedic texts, our Acharyas have prescribed seasonal routines known as Ritucharya (Ritu = season, Charya = regimen).
Here’s how you can align with Ayurveda this summer:
๐ 1. Stay Hydrated – The Ayurvedic Way
Keep your body cool and toxins flushed out by drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day. Some ideal Ayurvedic summer drinks include:
๐ง Coconut water – Replenishes electrolytes and prevents dehydration๐ฅคWatermelon juice – Hydrating and rich in antioxidants
๐ฅ Cucumber (Susheetala) – Contains 96% water, reduces heat and quenches thirst
๐ Lemon water – Acts as a natural diaphoretic and aids digestion
๐ฅ Buttermilk (Lassi) – Cooling, improves digestion, and pacifies Pitta
๐ฅ Dahashamani water – A herbal infusion of vetiver, elaichi, khadira, coriander, and pathanga to reduce body heat
๐ฟ Mint/coriander/cucumber-infused water – Refreshing and soothing
๐ฅ 2. Eat Cooling, Pitta-Pacifying Foods
A cooling Ayurvedic diet includes sweet, juicy, astringent, and bitter foods that naturally balance Pitta. Ideal summer foods:
Fruits: Watermelon, melon, grapes, pears, cherries, ripe mangoesVegetables: Broccoli, zucchini, cucumber, asparagus, leafy greens
Legumes: Moong dal (sprouted or cooked), known for its cooling nature
Healthy fats: Ghee – best taken before meals for digestion and Pitta pacification
Avoid: Spicy, oily, fermented, and sour foods which aggravate Pitta
๐ฟ 3. Cool Showers & Gentle Body Care
Take cool or lukewarm bathsAvoid excessive steaming and strong massages
Abhyanga (self-massage): Use coconut oil for a cooling and calming effect
Scalp massage: Reduces heat and improves circulation
Aromatherapy: Use sandalwood, vetiver, rose, or jasmine essential oils for calming the mind and senses
๐ 4. Dress Light, Dress Right
Wear light, loose-fitting clothes made of cotton, linen, or hemp in soothing shades like white, pastel blue, or green. Opt for cotton bedsheets and airy footwear to keep your body comfortable.
๐ 5. Avoid Excessive Heat & Intense Exercise
Avoid strenuous workouts between 10 AM to 2 PM, when the sun and Pitta are at their peakPractice gentle yoga or walking during early morning or evening hours
Choose activities that cool and calm the body, rather than overheat it
๐งด 6. Protect Yourself from the Sun
Use natural sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses when stepping outStay indoors during peak heat hours
For sunburns, apply pure aloe vera gel, ghee, rose water, or turmeric-coriander paste on affected areas
๐ง♀️ 7. Cool the Mind with Yoga & Meditation
Practice Soorya Namaskara (Sun Salutation) mindfully in early morningSheetali and Sheetkari Pranayama: Cooling breathing techniques to calm the mind
Meditation and mindfulness practices to soothe mental Pitta and emotional irritability
๐จ๐ฉ๐ง๐ฆ 8. Nourish Your Relationships
Spending time with loved ones, enjoying relaxed conversations, laughter, and meaningful connections helps pacify mental Pitta and nourish the heart.
๐ 9. Embrace the Moonlight
In Ayurveda, the Moon is considered a cooling, stabilizing force—the perfect counterbalance to the heat of the sun. Spend time under the moonlight to not only calm Pitta but also soothe Vata dosha.
